Don't let Sacramento plan our neighborhoods!
The high cost of housing in San Mateo County is a very important issue - a top priority for elected officials and staff throughout the County. City and county government entities - headed by your locally elected officials - are working on solutions to increase supply, while maintaining and supporting our local way of life and unique character of our towns. California Senate Bill 50, introduced by State Senator Scott Weiner - a Democrat from San Francisco - would allow politicians and bureaucrats in Sacramento to waive local zoning rules, overriding the processes that we have in place, and ignoring the will of the local population.
Officials from all political orientations in San Mateo County have come out publicly against SB-50, and we have heard from city council members in Burlingame, Palo Alto, and Menlo Park. Even the elected officials in San Francisco have expressed significant concerns and opposition.
We can improve housing availability and lower cost of living in our communities through sound public policies and effective regulation - implemented at the local level - that restore vigor to the housing market, increase available supply and lower costs for all. We agree with San Francisco Supervisor Gordon Mar, a Democrat who points out that, "We should increase [housing] density, especially near transit, and we should update our zoning to allow this. But we should do this through a robust, community-led process ... not mandates handed down from Sacramento."
